From the GregTech Website:

Here is a little List of things you have to do in the beginning of GT in order to start.

First thing to do is craft a Stone Hammer, there are variants for Granite and other Rocks too and those will also work.
Here is the Recipe

SS
SSW
SS

S = Stone, W = Wooden Stick

Now you need to get Copper.
For that you can smelt Tetrahedrite, Malachite, Chalcopyrite or regular Copper Ore in a regular vanilla Furnace.

Now you need 2 Copper Plates to make your first File. In order to do that you need 4 Copper Ingots.
To craft them use a Hammer and two Ingots like this first:

H
I
I

H = Hammer, I = Copper Ingot

then you have a Double Ingot which you then smash again like this

H
D

H = Hammer, D = Double Copper Ingot

Now you got Plates. Use those Plates like the following to craft a File

P
P
W

P = Copper Plate, W = Wooden Stick

For the next step you need 3 more Ingots and make one Plate and one Rod out of them.
The Plates you already know how to make, and the Rod is crafted with the File and an Ingot.
Arrange the Plate the Rod and a wooden Stuck like the following to get your first Chisel.

P
R
W

P = Copper Plate, R = Copper Rod, W = Wooden Stick

Now that you have the Tools you need Hardened Clay, its vanilla Clay so you know how to get that already I hope.
The Hardened Clay can be used to make Crucibles and Molds, the Chisel is used to put Shapes in the Molds.
You will also need a Burning Box to palce below your Crucible. Those can be made with Lead or Bismuth. They also need some Copper.
You need either Double Plates of Lead or Double Plates of Bismuth to craft them. Their Ores do smelt in a regular Furnace.

-------------------------------------------

Hints for the use of the Crucible and the Burning Box:

Starting a Fire is as easy as grabbing a GT Knife or Sword and cutting Grass, then drying it, and crafting it together with Sticks to get a basic Single Use Fire Starter (which doesn't even work half the time, yeah it's inteded to be annoying to use, so you use better methods later).

Use Saplings or Planks as early fuel if you don't know how much Heat you need to smelt something.
Place an opaque Block in front of the Burning Box in order to make it stop burning (once the current fuel is used up <- thats why saplings)

Do NOT throw in whole Ore Blocks, they will only smelt into their Stone Type without giving you any of the Stuff you want, you HAVE TO crush the Ore First usign a Hammer! To do that, just place the Ore and mine it with a Hammer.
When you smelt crushed Ores you might want to remove the Stone Scraps first before igniting the Burning Box, otherwise you only see molten Stone floating ontop.

In order to make Iron in the Crucible you need the following:
One of either Marble, Quarried Stone, Limestone, Chalk or actual Calcite (all those stone types smelt into Calcite)
Dark Ashes (you get that stuff from burning coal in a burning box)
An Iron containing Ore such as: Magnetite, Basaltic/Granitic Mineral Sand, Yellow/Brown Limonite or Hematite (Banded Iron).

You can burn Stuff in the Burning Box without having a Crucible ontop, useful if you need Dark Ashes but dont have anything to use the Coal on. (still a waste of Energy though)

-------------------------------------------

You need Water but cant get an Iron Bucket? Use a Wooden Bucket instead, to at least be able to move Water, Milk and Latex around.

You want a Hopper but dont have Iron for it? GregTech has its own Hoppers aswell, they could help you with automating simple Stuff earlygame.

You need magnetic Iron Rods for Motors and Dynamos? No Problem the early Tier Iron Rods can be crafted with Redstone to magnetize them without the need of a Polarizer or Electromagnet.

When searching for Ores, NEVER DIG A STRAIGHT HORIZONTAL LINE LIKE YOU ARE USED TO FROM VANILLA MC, you will very likely not find any large GT Ore Veins that way, especially not the ones you are searching for. Digging Vertical Shafts every 48 Meters is the best way to find GT Ores.

When crafting Machines for your Setups, MAKE SURE THAT THE POWER LEVELS ARE MATCHING, Just because a Machine is made of Bronze doesn't necessarily mean that another Bronze Machine connected to that one is a good Idea. The "same Material -> same Tier"-Concept DOES NOT WORK IN GT6! Look at the Tooltips!

Speaking of that, don't try to run Steam Powered Setups hard on the Limit, you WILL blow up your Stuff due to the irregular nature of Steam. A Turbine that can emit 64RU/t might emit 65RU/t for a moment and then you are screwed.
